It is my pleasure to invite you to the new MBA@Rice Community Slack!
The Rice Business Student Association for Online (RBSAO) has been working tirelessly to better cultivate a sense of community within our cohorts and across our virtual program. Slack is the new foundation we’re building on to achieve that goal.
Slack is a modern communications platform designed to help teams & groups of people get connected and stay in the know. Slack is available on the web, as an app on your desktop or laptop, and an app on your phone or tablet.
This will replace our WhatsApp group, which was a fairly limited way to keep everyone in sync:
- Designed to be one, large SMS group chat
- Only one-way communication
- Not optimized for sending links, pictures, videos, PDFs
Slack, on the other hand:
- Designed to have large group “channels”, broken down into smaller “threads”
- Has direct messaging
- Full, two-way communication between students & the elected RBSAO board
- Private—students only (no staff/faculty)
- Built for easily reacting with emojis, sending GIFs, sharing files & videos
Getting Started in Slack
In Slack, you are can request to be added into your cohort channel, which is a private channel that only includes members of your cohort. This is a place where you can easily connect with your peers, get on the same page about assignments due, and get better acclimated to Rice Business.
You will also have access to public channels in Slack. These include #general-announcements, which is where RBSAO will keep you updated with what’s going on in the program; #clubs-and-student-orgs, to share and learn info about student club opportunities and activities; and even #textbook-exchange, where you can arrange to give (or sell) your old textbook to another student about to take that same class.
Each channel has its own notification settings, so you can choose exactly what you want to receive a push notification or email about.
How To Get Signed Up
Easy! Go to https://rbsao.slack.com/signup and sign up with your Rice email address.
Please email me (nerd@rice.edu) if you have any questions, or our RBSAO email (JGS-RBSAO@rice.edu) and let us know what you like, what you don’t, and what you think can be added to make this virtual community a great one!
